Late in the afternoon, after a huge fight with longtime sworn enemy Helen Bronski, Miriam yelled angrily in the park and cried alone on the bench. As his father Arthur Pendragon saw him, he knew Miriam was upset. He went up to Miriam and said, "Miriam, you look upset. What's the matter? Why are you crying?"
Miriam looked at him with angry tears in his eyes and said, "Pa, I never thought you'd ask. Helen Bronski is so mean! She made me angry for no reason! She cheated on a math test with a key, the teacher didn't believe it and she picked on me all the time because she thinks I'm ugly! She tried to embarass me by attempting to destroy my necklace in front of the staff! I'd rather hang myself than waste time with her!" Miriam yelled. He buried his head in his hands in anger. As for his mother Alice, she also knew that Miriam was upset.
She hugged Miriam and told her, "There, there, Miriam. It's not your fault." "It's not?" She asked sobbingly. "No, of course not. It was Helen. She hurt your feelings and she picked on you." Alice said as she consoled her tenderly. "Ma, If you and Pa were both here for me and to protect me from Helen, you would confront her in a serious way. I would've had one other person to defend me from her, but I didn't!" Miriam sobbed and started to cry loudly. Arthur and Alice hugged Miriam lovingly.
However, Helen Bronski was very angry when she saw Miriam with his mother and father. She did not realize she made her cry and accused her wrongfully of things she did not do. She scuttled off as Miriam glared at her through the gap in Alice's arms. "Miriam, we're going home." Arthur helped Miriam up and took him home with them. "Where do you think you're going, yeah?" Helen yelled as Miriam went away. Miriam glared at Heather. "Leave me alone!" he shouted. He left with his family, but Helen wouldn't give in without a fight. "You don't run when I talk to you!" Heather yelled again. "YOU COME BACK HERE, GIRL!!!" They were gone already. "Darn it!" Helen cursed. "She's dead at school when we come back on Monday!" She did not know that was so not going to happen. She just went home in anger as the sun began to set.
